What is Wyzant?
Wyzant is a marketplace for private tutors. It started in 2005 in Chicago, and IXL Learning bought it in 2021. IXL is the company behind the IXL practice site. Wyzant lists more than 65,000 tutors in more than 300 subjects.
You search profiles, read reviews, message a tutor, and book a lesson. Lessons happen online or in person.
Each tutor sets their own price. You pay through Wyzant, usually after the lesson. With Instant Book, you pay when you book. There is no subscription and no monthly plan.
How much does Wyzant cost?
Wyzant says AP tutors cost $35 to $60 an hour on average. We look at AP Calculus below, because that is the class we know. Compare with what other math tutors cost.
On October 22, 2026, we looked at the first 19 tutors on Wyzant’s AP Calculus page, in the order Wyzant shows them. Their rates were:
| What we saw | Per hour |
|---|---|
| Lowest | $60 |
| Half the tutors charged | $150 or less |
| Highest | $400 |
Most of them charged $100 to $250. These tutors are the top of the list: most have more than 1,000 hours on Wyzant and a 5.0 rating. You can find tutors for less if you filter by price.
On top of the tutor’s rate:
- A 9% service fee on each lesson, plus taxes. The fee also applies when a cancelled lesson is charged.
- No sign-up fee and no subscription.
- The first lesson is not free. Under the Good Fit Guarantee, you pay for it, and you can ask for a refund of the first hour if the tutor is not a good fit.
Example: a $100 tutor costs $109 an hour with the fee. Two hours a week for an 18 week semester is $3,924, before taxes.
Is Wyzant safe?
Wyzant handles the payment. The background check is up to you. Here is what Wyzant does, and what it leaves to you.
- Tutor checks. Wyzant has a team that reviews each tutor’s education, experience and proficiency quizzes before the profile goes live.
- Background checks are not required. Any parent can order one on a tutor for $15.99. It is done by Checkr. It checks the Social Security number, sex offender registries, and felony and misdemeanor convictions from the last 7 years. If you order it, the tutor must complete and pass it to stay on Wyzant.
- Pay through Wyzant only. Wyzant asks you to never pay a tutor directly.
- An adult present. Wyzant says an adult should always be present when the student is under 18. In person, it suggests a public place, such as a library.
- The Good Fit Guarantee. If the first lesson with a new tutor is not a good fit, tell Wyzant within 30 days and it refunds the first hour. It covers only your first lesson with that tutor.
- You check the hours. The tutor reports each lesson, then Wyzant charges you. Tutors have up to 14 days to report. Check each charge against the lessons your child had.
What parents like.
From parent reviews on Trustpilot and a homeschool parent’s review:
- You choose the person. You can read a tutor’s profile and reviews, and message them, before you book.
- You pay per lesson. No package, no subscription. You stop when your child does not need help.
- The guarantee. In a sponsored review, a homeschool parent says Wyzant refunded the first hour after a poor match.
- Experienced tutors. Some tutors list years of AP classroom teaching. Ask whether they taught your child’s course recently.
What parents complain about.
Wyzant’s Trustpilot score is low. Read it with care: many of the 1,500 reviews come from tutors, about pay and accounts, not from parents. The Reddit threads about Wyzant are mostly from tutor forums too.
Some parent and student reviews on Trustpilot mention:
- Tutors who did not show up, or lessons charged that parents dispute.
- Slow support and refunds that were refused.
- Quality that varies. It is a marketplace, so one tutor is not like another.
On the Better Business Bureau, Wyzant has an A+ rating but is not accredited. It had 19 complaints in the last 3 years.

How to pick a good tutor on Wyzant.
- Read the tutor’s reviews, for teaching, and Wyzant’s reviews, for billing and support. Look for reviews from parents of students in the same class as your child.
- Check the exact course. AP Calculus AB and BC are not the same exam. Ask what the tutor has taught, and in which year.
- Treat the first lesson as a test. After it, ask your child to explain one problem they worked on. If it is not a fit, use the Good Fit Guarantee.
- Agree on the goal. Homework each week, a test next month, or a 5 in May. Say it in the first message.
- Agree on the hours each month. Then check each charge against the lessons your child had.
