Sources: units and pace from the Course and Exam Description, the exam from College Board’s AB and BC exam pages, college equivalents and prerequisites from the AB and BC course pages, and scores from the 2026 AB and BC score tables. Class periods are College Board’s suggested pacing, for 45 minute classes five days a week. Your school can differ.
What BC adds to AB.
College Board lists these topics as BC only (College Board, Course and Exam Description):
- More ways to integrate (Unit 6): integration by parts, partial fractions, improper integrals.
- Euler’s method and logistic growth (Unit 7).
- Arc length and distance along a curve (Unit 8).
- Parametric equations, polar coordinates and vector-valued functions (Unit 9): curves that are not y = f(x), like a path in the plane or a spiral.
- Infinite sequences and series (Unit 10): sums with infinitely many terms, and when they add up to a number. Series are 15% to 20% of the BC multiple choice section (AP Central).
A BC student learns every AB topic too, just faster.
Is AP Calculus AB hard?
For most students, yes. Calculus brings in limits, rates that change at every instant, and change that adds up over time. It also uses all the algebra and trig from earlier years.
In 2026, 20% of AB students scored a 5 and 65% scored 3 or more (College Board).
Students also need to explain why their answers are right. On one 2025 question, only 7% of AB students earned the point for explaining why their answer was the overall maximum (2025 Chief Reader Report). Many students can do the computation. Writing the reason is a separate skill.
What helps:
- After each problem, ask “what does this number mean?” A derivative is a rate. An integral is an amount.
- When a problem goes wrong, find out if it is the new idea or an older skill, like logs or trig. Ask the teacher which one.
- Practice writing the reason, in full sentences, on old free response questions.
Is AP Calculus BC hard?
Yes. The main reason is the pace. College Board’s suggested plan gives limits about 22 class periods in AB and about 13 in BC (Course and Exam Description). BC students learn the AB topics in less time, then do two more units.
The BC only units are hard for many students. In 2025, the free response question on polar curves had the lowest average of the six BC questions: 3.09 out of 9 points. The series question averaged 4.32 out of 9 (2025 Chief Reader Report).
With series, students must choose a test and explain why it applies. That choice is new for most of them.
Still, 82% of BC students scored 3 or more in 2026, and 46% scored a 5 (College Board).
Is AB or BC harder?
BC: more topics, at a faster pace. The higher BC scores do not mean it is easier. Different students take it. In 2025, AB and BC students answered the same first free response question. BC students averaged 5.22 out of 9, and AB students 3.26 (2025 Chief Reader Report).
Is Calc BC the same as Calc 2?
Not exactly. BC covers Calc 2, and Calc 1 too. College Board says BC is equal to first semester college calculus and the single variable course that comes after it (College Board). At most colleges, that next course is Calc 2.
The credit is not automatic. Each college decides what score it accepts and what credit it gives. Some give credit for Calc 1 and Calc 2. Some give only Calc 1. Look up each college on its AP credit page, or with College Board’s AP credit policy search.
For parents, this is a money point. A good BC score can replace up to two college math courses. Ask the college if the credit counts toward your child’s degree.
The BC exam also gives an AB subscore, from the AB part of the exam (about 60% of it). College Board asks colleges to treat it like an AB exam score (College Board). So a hard day on series does not erase the AB work.
Which one should you take? Four questions.
- How did Precalculus go? Ask the Precalculus teacher if your child is ready for BC’s pace. They see your child’s work every day.
- How much time is there this year? BC moves faster. Ask how much homework each course gives a week, and compare that with your child’s other classes and activities.
- What are the college plans? For a possible math, science or engineering major, look at the math courses that colleges require. BC covers more of them.
- Who teaches BC at your school? A strong teacher matters more than the course name. Ask students who took it last year how it went.
Can a student take BC without AB? Yes. College Board does not list AB as a prerequisite for BC (BC course). Ask your school about its own rules. A student can’t take both exams in the same year (BC exam).
What to do if your child struggles.
Struggle in calculus is normal. These ideas are new to almost everyone. What helps most is to act early, in the first unit that does not make sense, not in April.
- Ask the teacher first. Office hours are free, and the teacher knows what is on the next test.
- Practice old free response questions. College Board publishes past exams with scoring guidelines (AB, BC). They show what earns points.
- Get help on the unit that is hard now. A tutor can help, and prices vary widely. See what a math tutor costs. Before you book, ask if the tutor has taught AB or BC.
- Ask about switching early. Ask the school if your child can move from BC to AB, and until what date.
- Try Sophie, our own tutor. She helps with every AB and BC unit, from $8 an hour. About Sophie for AP Calculus.
