How Wyzant works
Wyzant is a marketplace of more than 65,000 tutors. You search profiles, read reviews, message a tutor and book a lesson, online or in person. Each tutor sets their own price, and you pay after each lesson. There is no subscription.
- The price. Wyzant says AP tutors cost $35 to $60 an hour on average. Some charge $150 or more.
- A 9% fee. Wyzant adds a service fee of 9% to each lesson, plus taxes.
- The Good Fit Guarantee. If the first hour with a new tutor is not a good fit, you can report it within 30 days, and Wyzant refunds that hour.
- Cancelling a lesson. Each tutor sets their own policy, with up to 36 hours of notice. Lessons booked with Instant Book have a 24 hour window.
Why parents look elsewhere.
Many families find a great tutor on Wyzant. Others run into one of these:
- Finding the right person takes time. Tutor quality varies, so parents read profiles and try tutors. A homeschool parent who likes Wyzant still says you have to vet carefully.
- The cost adds up. At $35 to $60 an hour plus 9%, two hours a week through a semester is well over $1,000.
- Help is booked, not on demand. A lesson needs a time that works for both of you. Homework gets stuck at 9 pm.
- Billing and support. Wyzant’s Trustpilot score is 1.6 from about 1,500 reviews. Recent reviews mention disputed charges, tutors who did not show up, and slow replies. Many reviews come from tutors rather than families.
The alternatives.
Varsity Tutors
Varsity Tutors matches your child with a tutor instead of asking you to search. Most families buy a monthly Learning Membership. PrepMaven reports $70 to $100 an hour, or about $269 to $299 a month for 4 hours plus group classes. Prices come through a sales call. Read our Varsity Tutors review.
Tutor.com and The Princeton Review
One company now. Its on demand tutoring connects your child to a human tutor in a minute or two, at any hour, and lists AP Calculus AB and BC. Plans start at $39.99 a month for one hour, or $349.99 for 10 hours to use within six months. New users get a free 30 minute trial. A dedicated tutor on a schedule starts at $80 an hour.

Khan Academy and Khanmigo
Khan Academy’s AP Calculus AB and BC courses are free, with videos and practice. Its AI helper, Khanmigo, costs $4 a month and works by typed chat. See how Khanmigo compares with Sophie.
